Starbucks and Gluten-Free: Coffee is Your Best Friend
The good news about Starbucks: the vast majority of their beverages are naturally gluten-free. Coffee, espresso, tea, and most of the ingredients used to customize drinks do not contain gluten. If you drink coffee or tea, Starbucks is a reliable stop.
The challenge is food. Starbucks' bakery items—croissants, muffins, sandwiches, and most baked goods—contain wheat. Cross-contamination from baked goods is possible at the counter where food is handled alongside drinks.
Beverages: Mostly Safe
Hot and iced coffee drinks: espresso, Americano, cappuccino, latte, macchiato, and most other espresso-based drinks are GF. The espresso itself contains no gluten.
Teas: hot and iced teas are naturally GF. Most herbal teas and green teas are safe. Check any specialty tea latte blends for added flavoring.
Cold brew and nitro cold brew: both naturally GF.
Frappuccinos: the base Frappuccino is GF. Most flavored syrups are GF. The java chips (chocolate chips) used in some Frappuccinos contain wheat—skip these. Cookie crumble toppings contain wheat.
Standard syrups (vanilla, hazelnut, caramel, cinnamon dolce, etc.): the clear syrups are generally GF. Caramel sauce and mocha sauce are GF in current formulation. Always verify as formulations change.
Oat milk: Starbucks uses Oatly oat milk. Standard Oatly products are made from oats that are not certified GF. People with celiac disease sensitive to avenin or trace gluten should use dairy, coconut, soy, or almond milk instead.
Sauces and Flavors With Gluten Risk
Matcha powder: Starbucks' matcha contains sugar and green tea—no wheat. GF.
Chai concentrate: Starbucks' chai latte concentrate does not contain gluten ingredients in current US formulation.
Pumpkin spice sauce: the pumpkin sauce has historically not contained wheat ingredients. Check current formulation for your market.
Food Items at Starbucks
Starbucks has expanded GF food options significantly. Look in the pastry case for items labeled "gluten-free." In the United States, certified GF options have included:
Marshmallow Dream Bar: a rice cereal-based bar, certified GF.
Sous Vide Egg Bites: the egg white and egg bites are generally certified GF (check current status).
Moon Cheese: a packaged cheese snack, naturally GF.
The specific GF food items available vary by location and season. Ask your barista to see the allergen information for any food item. Starbucks is required to have allergen information available on request.
Cross-Contamination at Starbucks
The primary cross-contamination risk at Starbucks is not in the drinks but at the counter where food is handled. Baristas who handle croissants, sandwiches, and other baked goods use the same surfaces and may not change gloves between food handling and drink preparation.
For strict celiac safety, limit your Starbucks experience to beverages only and avoid any food from the case.
Ordering Strategy for GF Drinks
Most Starbucks customizations are GF-friendly. A standard latte with regular dairy milk, almond milk, coconut milk, or soy milk is reliably safe. Skip whipped cream toppings if they are applied with shared equipment from a contaminated dispenser (though the whipped cream itself is GF).
A straightforward approach: order your coffee drink of choice, request no cookie crumble or java chip additions, and pick up your drink without food items. For most people with gluten sensitivity, this is adequate. For celiac disease, be aware of the limitations around shared counter space.
The Starbucks App and Mobile Ordering
Starbucks' mobile app allows you to customize drinks before arrival. This is useful for GF ordering because you can select exactly what goes into your drink and review customizations before reaching the counter.
Mobile ordering also reduces verbal communication at the counter, which can be helpful when communicating dietary restrictions feels awkward. Your customized, GF-friendly drink is ready when you arrive.
The app does not filter for GF food items, but the barista notes field allows you to add a note about your dietary needs. This note goes to the barista preparing your drink and may prompt additional care in preparation.
